In September 2024, Jennifer, her sister Paula, and I signed up for a river cruise on the Guadiana river which forms the border between southern Portugal and Spain. We embarked in Vila Real de Santo António and the up-river destination was the tiny village (aldeia) of Foz de Odeleite on the Portuguese side of the river.

The boat trip was pleasant but somewhat tedious -- the one-way trip to Foz de Odeleite was more than two hours. There is virtually nothing of interest to look at on either side of the river except for the International Bridge that links the two countries. Upon arrival, we disembarked and toured the village which also was uninspiring, being quite run-down and with no real points of interest. Our colorful, Dutch, multi-lingual tour guide did her best to entertain us both on and off the boat, and we managed to fill the time chatting with other tourgoers (including a fun gal who who looked a lot like a young Whoopi Goldberg). We ate at a local restaurant where the staff performed musical song and dance for us. It was kitsch but fun.
